Switching your Merchant Center

Switching your Merchant Center

This is the whole of the operational work: a request, an acceptance, and a wait of a day or two. It is worth spelling out anyway, because the most common reason a merchant does not have the advantage is that nobody ever accepted the request.

What actually happens

A CSS partner sends an association request to your Merchant Center account. You accept it in Merchant Center settings. From that point, the products in that account are submitted to Shopping auctions through that CSS instead of through Google Shopping Europe. Nothing in Google Ads is touched at any stage.

The steps

  1. Find your Merchant Center ID. It is in the top right of Merchant Center, and it is the only thing the CSS needs from you.
  2. Create the Cobiro account and enter that ID. This is what generates the request.
  3. Open Merchant Center, go to the CSS section of your account settings, and accept the pending association.
  4. Wait. The CPC advantage typically becomes active within 24 to 48 hours.
  5. Confirm the attribution line under your live Shopping ads has changed to your CSS. That is the visible proof the association took.

The request expires if it is never accepted, and no error is raised anywhere that a busy merchant would notice. If a switch appears not to have worked, this is the first thing to check.

What to check in the first week

  • Average CPC on the same products. Compare like with like, on campaigns whose structure did not change, over a stable period.
  • Impression share. If it rose while CPC stayed flat, the advantage went into winning more auctions rather than into savings. Both are the advantage.
  • Product coverage. Nothing should have changed here at all. If the number of approved products moved, the cause is a feed change that happened to coincide, not the CSS.

What not to do

Do not restructure campaigns in the same week. Do not cut bids to "bank" the saving. Do not pause and restart campaigns to force a refresh. All three make the before-and-after unreadable, and the last one costs you learning data for no benefit.

Switching back

The same settings page reverses it. There is no notice period, no penalty and no re-approval, and campaign history survives the round trip. This matters mostly as reassurance: the decision is cheap to reverse, which is why it is a small decision.
