Selling CSS to clients

Selling CSS to clients

This is an easy sale made hard by over-explaining it. The client does not need the antitrust history. They need to know what changes, what it costs, and what it saves.

The pitch, in one paragraph

We are a Google CSS Partner. Moving your Shopping ads through our CSS lowers your cost per click by around 20 percent. Nothing changes in your campaigns, your budgets or your product feed, and the only visible difference is a small line under your ads that will carry our name instead of Google’s. It takes five minutes and it is reversible.

Lead with what does not change. Merchants who have been burned by agency "optimisations" hear "we are going to touch your Shopping account" and stop listening.

Bring their numbers, not yours

Open their Shopping spend for the last twelve months, take 20 percent of it, and put your monthly fee next to it. A client spending 5,000 euro a month is looking at roughly 1,000 euro a month against a fee of 40. That comparison does the selling; anything you add to it dilutes it.

The four objections

They say The answer
Will it disrupt my campaigns? Nothing in Google Ads changes. Smart Bidding is not reset and history is kept.
Why is Google letting you do this? It is a remedy from a 2017 EU antitrust decision, not a promotion.
What is the catch on the ad label? One line of grey text changes. Click-through is unaffected.
Can I stop? From Merchant Center settings, any time, with no penalty.

When to raise it

At the point you are already discussing Shopping performance. CSS is not a standalone conversation for an existing client. It is the easiest thing you will say in a quarterly review. For a prospect you do not yet manage, it is the opposite: a low-commitment, measurable win that opens a relationship.

Set expectations about measurement

Tell them in advance that the effect will appear as some mix of lower CPC and higher impression share, and that Smart Bidding will spend part of the saving on winning more auctions rather than banking it. A client expecting their bill to fall 20 percent and finding their traffic up instead will believe you oversold it, when you underexplained it.
