How Google Shopping Ads work

How Google Shopping Ads work

A Shopping ad is assembled by Google out of your product data and shown against a query you never chose. Knowing which half of that sentence you control is what separates accounts that improve from accounts that only get rebuilt.

The path a product takes

  1. Your feed lands in Merchant Center, where each item is validated against Google’s product data specification.
  2. An approved item becomes eligible for Shopping surfaces, meaning the Shopping tab, Search, Images and Lens, and, if you advertise, for the Shopping auction.
  3. Google matches the item to a query by reading its data. There are no keywords to bid on: the title, description, product type, brand and attributes are what the matching runs on.
  4. The ad is built from the item’s image, title and price. You do not write ad copy.
  5. The auction ranks eligible items by bid and quality, and the CSS the item was submitted through decides the effective weight of that bid.

The feed is the ad

Because Google composes the ad itself, most levers that look like campaign levers are really feed levers. A product that never shows for a query usually lacks the words that query uses somewhere in its data. A product with a weak click-through rate usually has a picture that loses to the six around it. Both are fixed in the feed, not in the campaign.

When a campaign underperforms, look at the product data before you look at the bidding strategy.

Standard Shopping and Performance Max

Standard Shopping campaigns do one thing and let you see it: they bid on Shopping placements, with product groups you define and reporting per product. Performance Max spends across Shopping, Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Maps and Gmail from one budget, using automated bidding and asset groups.

PMax generally wins on total performance and loses on visibility. For a retail account, most of its spend goes to Shopping placements, which is where the CSS advantage applies. What you give up is granular control and the ability to see exactly which surface produced which result. That is a trade-off worth making deliberately rather than by default.

Free listings sit alongside the ads

Approved products in Merchant Center are also eligible for unpaid listings on the Shopping tab, in Search, in Images and in Lens, and increasingly as sources for AI shopping answers. The same feed quality decides both, so a catalogue cleaned up for the auction improves the free surfaces at the same time and at no additional cost.
